Porthole

Side Scuttle is a water-tight circular window set on the side shell, superstructure and outer wall of the deckhouse of the ship. It is generally composed of the main window frame, glass pressing plate, storm cover, etc. Marine side scuttles, together with their glass and side scuttle cover (storm cover), should be of solid structure, and should be able to close effectively and ensure watertightness.

Definition of Side Scuttle

Section 4.2 of ISO 6345-1990 "Shipbuilding and Marine Structures-Windows and Portholes-Vocabulary" stipulates: "Open hinged type with or without storm cover or fixed ISO standardized type marine round window."

Equivalent to adopting the national standard GB/T 14413-93 of the People’s Republic of China compiled by ISO 1751 "Shipbuilding-Portholes", the portholes specified in Chapter 3.1 are defined as: "In compliance with the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and the Classification Code for Ship Construction, Water-tight circular windows are installed in the side shell, superstructure and outdoor bulkhead of the deck."

Heavy porthole and medium porthole

1, The structure of heavy portholes (type A) and medium portholes (type B) is basically the same. The main difference between the two is the thickness of the glass. The glass thickness of the A and B portholes of the same specification is larger than that of the latter. The main window frame of the bolted porthole is short and has a flange with bolt holes for installation. The main window frame of the welded side scuttle is longer, without flanges, and is directly welded to the ship structure.

2, According to the opening and installation methods of the side scuttle, it can be divided into the following types: A (or B) type LB (RB) type-bolt installation left (right) opening type side scuttle; A (or B) type SB type-bolt installation total Hinged side scuttle; A (or B) type NB type—bolt-installed fixed port scuttle; A (or B) type LW (RW) type—welded installation of left (right) open side scuttle; A (or B) type SW type— Welding installation of common hinged side scuttle; A (or B) type NW type-welding installation of fixed side scuttle.

3, Heavy-duty side scuttles are used in the space below the bulkhead deck or freeboard deck of sea-going vessels, where the side openings are allowed above the full load waterline, and where watertight and airtight are required. Medium-sized portholes are used for the ends of the side or superstructure above the bulkhead deck or freeboard deck of passenger ships, and the sides and ends of the first superstructure on the freeboard deck of the Philippine passenger ship.
