Definition
1. The general term for closing the lids of various hatches. According to tightness requirements, there are generally watertight hatch covers, oiltight hatch covers and non-tight hatch covers.
2. In order to prevent water from entering the cabin, the wooden or steel cover installed on the hatch can also be used as a supporting structure for deck cargo.
Introduction
Hatch cover is a general term for the cover and its opening and closing device for closing various hatches on the ship. The main function of the hatch cover is to ensure that waves and rain will not invade the cargo hold, and some hatch covers also bear the weight of the cargo on the deck.
According to the size of the hatch, it is divided into a large hatch cover and a small hatch cover. The former is used for cargo holds for loading bulk dry cargo, materials, or vehicles, also known as cargo hatch covers; the latter is used for cargo holds for loading liquid cargo, refrigerated cargo, etc., as well as personnel access hatches and manholes. According to the material and type of the hatch cover, there are solid wood or metal hatch covers, wooden assembled hatch covers, and assembled hatch covers composed of box-shaped or corrugated section panels made of metal or glass fiber reinforced plastic. Small hatch covers are generally opened and closed by manpower, while large hatch covers must be opened and closed with electric or hydraulic drive mechanical devices. According to the transmission mode, it can be divided into rolling hatch cover. The rolling type includes vertical type, inclined type, and sleeve type. Rolling type includes side shifting type, stacking type, rolling type, and hinged type including hinged flipping type, folding type, etc. According to the tightness, there are watertight, oiltight, airtight, and non-tight hatch covers. According to different tightness requirements, there are beads, fillers, gaskets, compactors, etc. between the hatch cover and adjacent parts. Composed of the sealing device or sealing device.

Hatch cover
According to the material and type of the hatch cover, there are solid wood or metal hatch covers, wooden assembled hatch covers, and assembled hatch covers composed of box-shaped or corrugated section panels made of metal or glass fiber reinforced plastic. Small hatch covers are generally opened and closed by manpower, while large hatch covers must be opened and closed with electric or hydraulic drive mechanical devices.

According to the tightness, there are watertight, oiltight, airtight and non-tight hatch covers. According to different tightness requirements, there are beads, fillers, gaskets, compactors, etc. between the hatch cover and adjacent parts. Composed of the sealing device or sealing device.
In addition, there is also a method of classification according to tightness: weathertight, oiltight, and non-watertight.
① Weathertight cargo hatch cover
The cargo hatch covers installed on the freeboard deck are all weathertight steel hatch covers.
②Hatch cover of oil-tight cargo oil tank
The hatches of cargo oil tanks shall not be arranged in the sheltered space. The hatch is small, but not less than 600 mm × 600 mm. There are measuring holes and observation holes with a diameter of not less than 150 mm on the hatch cover. There should be an effective cover and close device to ensure oil tightness on the hole.
The hatch openings of cargo oil tanks are usually round or oval. The long axis of the elliptical hatch is to be arranged along the length of the ship, and the openings are to be appropriately reinforced.
③Hatch covers in non-watertight cargo holds and cabins in residential areas The hatch on the lower deck of the cabin has no hatch coaming, and the hatch cover is flush with the surrounding deck.
Hatch cover design requirements
1. The structural strength of the hatch covers on all weather decks should be equal to the strength of their adjacent structures;
2. The closing device of the hatch cover should be weathertight;
3. If the hatch cover of the vehicle deck bears the vehicle load, the design pressure on the hatch cover should be checked for strength according to the value of the vehicle load.
